Supportive Vaccines

Vaccine vial and syringe

Hepatitis B

Recommended for people living with HIV to prevent HBV co-infection, which carries a higher risk of liver complications. Given per standard schedule; serologic response should be checked where feasible.

Vaccine vial and syringe

Pneumococcal (PCV/PPSV)

People with HIV face a substantially higher risk of invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia. Recommended regardless of CD4 count, though vaccine response may be reduced at lower CD4 levels.

Vaccine vial and syringe

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Reduces the risk of HPV-related cancers, including cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal cancer – a leading cause of death among people living with HIV. Given per standard age-based schedules.

Vaccine vial and syringe

Influenza (seasonal)

Immunocompromised individuals face a higher risk of severe or complicated influenza. Annual vaccination is recommended for people living with HIV.

Infant receiving vaccination

BCG (children only)

Helps prevent severe TB disease in children living with HIV. Given only to children who are not yet symptomatic or immunosuppressed, per national immunization schedules. Important: live vaccines – including BCG and certain measles, yellow fever, and varicella formulations – are generally contraindicated when CD4 is below 200 cells/mm³, which is the defining threshold for advanced HIV disease.
